Wi-Fi rides to wireless networks’ rescue

Good old Wi-Fi could be the fix to an impending explosion of data on wireless networks.

Nearly three years after Apple introduced the game-changing iPhone, wireless operators around the globe are feeling the effects of the wireless data tsunami that is well under way. Even networks that don’t support the iPhone are feeling the pinch as a generation of new wireless devices offering bandwidth-hungry Web applications are hitting networks.

FCC: iPad use could further strain AT&T 3G

Although Apple’s iPad has yet to hit the market, the Federal Communications Commission has expressed concern over its potential impact on AT&T’s 3G network.

Without naming AT&T, which has secured a carrier deal for the tablet device, Phil Bellaria, director of scenario planning, and John Leibovitz, deputy chief of the Wireless Telecommunications Bureau, outlined their concerns in an FCC blog post Monday:

Apple patch plugs iPhone, iPod Touch holes

Apple issued a patch on Tuesday for the iPhone and iPod Touch that plugs five holes, including several that could allow an attacker to take control of the device remotely.

Three of the vulnerabilities could allow someone to run code remotely, if an iPhone or iPod Touch user opened malicious audio or image files, or accessed a malicious FTP (File Transfer Protocol) server, Apple said.

AMD posts profit on Intel settlement

Advanced Micro Devices posted a fourth-quarter profit of $1.18 billion, its first profit in three years, largely due to a massive settlement with Intel. The $1.178 billion profit, or $1.52 per share, beat the analyst consensus estimate that had projected AMD to record a loss of 18 cents per share. In the same quarter last year, AMD lost $1.4 billion, or $2.36 per share.

HP joining 3D printer market with Stratasys deal

Hewlett-Packard, one of the biggest names in printing, is dipping into the 3D printer market through a deal with Minneapolis, Minn.-based Stratasys, the companies said Tuesday.

3D printers let people create three-dimensional models out of designs created on a computer, constructing the model by either removing material from a block or by building it up gradually from another material. Stratasys will manufacture an HP-branded 3D printer set for release later this year.

Sony has recently announced a new digital photo frame with a built-in printer, but what does it actually look like in the flesh? Pocket-lint was on hand to snap a photo gallery when it made a quick pit-stop in New York.

The new Sony digital S-Frame DPP-F700 is an all-in-one device that gets a 7-inch display with an 800 x 480 resolution and can print 4 x 6-inch, 300 x 300 dpi photos in 45 seconds.

ZINK and Pandigital announce Portable Photo Printer

The world’s first “Zero Ink” 4 x 6-inch photo printer has been announced from a team-up – promising more products in the future – from ZINK and Pandigital.

The Pandigital Portable Photo Printer uses ZINK paper that has the ink built-in with heat bringing out the colours to create an instant print.

With the claim of producing borderless full-colour 4 x 6-inch prints quickly and simply, the printer features a memory card slot and an LCD preview screen.

In the States the Pandigital Portable Photo Printer will be available from the end of 2009 onwards, and for Europe, and will be rolled out throughout 2010. No pricing revealed.

It's 2010 and still no MacBook Air with 3G.

Apple aluminum MacBooks are definitely cool–until you want 3G in a laptop. Then they’re not.

I’ve said this before. But I’ll say it again. There are consumers–including those potentially opting for laptops from Hewlett-Packard or Dell–who would like to buy a MacBook with 3G built in. Let’s hope Apple sees the light with the expected upgrade to the MacBook Pro line.
